Unless you’ve just crawled from under a rock, you’ve heard about how effective the cabbage soup diet is in helping people lose weight.

The core of the cabbage soup diet is, well, cabbage. This diet works by consuming low calorie cabbage soup for a week. The cabbage soup diet has been around since about the 1980’s, helping people lose weight.

The cabbage soup diet is best when used for short periods of time. It should not be used as a long term diet due to the low amounts of vital nutrients. Some medical experts and Nutritionist suggest taking supplements when you’re on the cabbage soup diet.

Cabbage soup helps people lose weight because it is very low in calories. It’s best used as a “filler” food, meaning it can be subsituted in the place of higher calorie food. For example, let’s say you want a high calorie meal of Pasta and Sauce. In order to prevent going over your alloted calories, you can cut back on the Pasta yet still get enough to satisfy your craving. You then finish the meal off with the low calorie cabbage soup.

Cabbage soup also makes an excellent in-between meal food due to it’s low calorie content.

Caution should be used when on the cabbage soup diet as it is common to add ingredients that make it heavy on the salt.

My suggestion to make cabbage soup taste better is to add hot sauce, such as Louisanna Hot Sauce to the cabbage soup. This way you’ll be getting the benefit to two diet friendly foods!

Here are a few cabbage soup recipes, I hope you’ll like them:

Cut cabbage head and carrots up into bite size pieces and add to the pot along with the tomatoes.

Use about 12 cups of water, cover and put heat on low. Add the remaining ingrediants and let the soup cook for at least two hours. More is better.

Traditional Southern Cabbage Soup Recipe

* 3/4 medium head cabbage, chopped
* 2 white onions, chopped
* 1 green pepper, chopped
* 1/2 cup chopped celery
* 4 cups water
* l large can (28 ounces) tomatoes, chopped, with juice
* 1 Can of Tomatoe paste
* 1 clove garlic, chopped
* 2 dashes hot sauce, optional
* 2 tablespoons brown sugar, firmly packed

Cooking Directions:

In large pot or kettle bring the mixture of ingrediants (except for garlic, hot sauce and brown sugar) to boil over medium-high heat. Then turn down to low and let simmer. Add the other ingrediants and continue cooking until ingredients are tender, about 1 1/2 hours. The longer ou let it simmer, the better it taste as the ingrediants really have a chance to blend together.

These two recipes will get you started on the cabbage soup diet. Don’t be afraid to try other ingrediants, just remember, this is a low calorie food so watch what you add to your cabbage soup recipe!
