A recent Australian study suggest that the Mediterranean Diet may actually help diabetics. The traditional Mediterranean Diet consist of eating foods such as vegetables, fruit and fish with less red meat.
The study found that Mediterranean immigrants to Australia had a lower death rate from heart disease than native Australians. This prompted the group to study the diet patterns of those migrating to Australia from the Mediterranean.
The 10 year study consisted of approximately 40,000 men and women. About a quarter of the people involved in the study were from the Mediterranean. The study used a questionare to calculate the food intake of fruits, vegetables and meats. You can find the published report by clicking here.
The study found that those who had a high intake of traditional Mediterranean foods such as fruits, vegetables and fish had a 30% less likely chance of dying from heart disease. It also found that the diet was most beneficial to those with diabetes.
The study also suggested that those that most benefited were those who had no signs of heart disease from the outset.
Dr. Linton R. Harriss stated
…the Mediterranean food patterns showed benefits whether we included or excluded people with a history of cardiovascular disease
Of course, isn’t this what we’ve known all along? Diets high in fruits and vegetables are good for us…repeat after me, diets high in fruits and vegetables are good for us. Now if we could just find a way to make it as fun to eat those things as it is our Snickers bar, then we’d be doing something!
